My Big Fat Greek Wedding tells the story of Toula Portokalos. She’s 30 years old and still not married, which means as a nice Greek girl she’s a failure. Then one day she meets the ultimate unattainable guy — Ian Miller. He’s tall and handsome but definitely not Greek, and their courtship is an Olympian culture clash. Can Ian handle Toula’s parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and several centuries of Greek heritage? One thing’s for sure — with Ian's proposal, they’re all headed for a big, fat Greek wedding.

The story was originally developed by Vardalos as a one-woman stage show.

Rita Wilson (Tom Hanks’ wife) saw the play and convinced Hanks to produce a movie version.

According to Vardalos, when Hanks first called her, she hung up on him because she thought it was a joke.

In the movie, all of the guests on the bride’s side of the church were actual members of Vardalos’ family.

Vardalos’ real-life husband, Ian Gomez, plays Ian’s best friend.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (DVD)

Love is here to stay... so is her family. Toula Portokalos lives in a Chicago suburb with her very Greek parents who promote three traditional values: marry a Greek boy, have Greek babies and feed everyone. So when Toula falls in love with a non-Greek vegetarian, she struggles to get her family to accept him. As Toula plans a big wedding with her eager fiancé, she learns to come to terms with her rich heritage, her cultural identity and her meddlesome but truly lovable family. Based on the one-woman show by Nia Vardalos.

Review

Like Vardalos and Corbett, who play their roles with vibrant charm, the film, directed by Joel Zwick, is heartfelt and hilarious in ways you can't fake. It's a keeper. --Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

There's such a good-natured heart beating beneath the cliches that it's easy to appreciate the film's willingness to poke gentle fun without a whiff of nastiness or judgment. --Paula Nechak, Seatlle Post- Intelligencer
